Hearing aids have been proven time and time again to help millions of people with hearing loss, whether mild or severe. It can also help alleviate tinnitus and other conditions. However, problems can arise when you get hearing aids for the first time or after some time. Here’s a common question: Do hearing aids cause dizziness? Let’s find out.
Reasons Hearing Aids Can Cause Dizziness
The Adjustment Period
Our ears do more than just help us hear. They also give us our sense of balance, of up and down. It’s amazing what they do without us having to think about it. Hearing aids are supposed to fix our hearing when it isn’t as it’s supposed to be, but that fix can come with an adjustment period. Dizziness can be a temporary part of the adjustment period.
The Wrong Fit
Hearing aids are meant to fit your ear’s unique shape (and ears are as unique as DNA). If your hearing aids aren’t fitting properly, the result could be ear pain, dizziness, or other symptoms. Don’t mistake real health problems with the adjustment period. Thankfully, getting new hearing aids usually comes with follow-up appointments, in which your audiologist can make any necessary adjustments.
Earwax Buildup
Earwax buildup is common the older you get, or if you don’t clean your ears. Earwax usually drains from your ears by itself, but dry earwax can become compacted and require routine removal. Ear irrigation is a good way to do this safely. For some, dizziness could be a symptom of earwax buildup.
Overamplification
If you listen to music too loudly for too long, you might notice the unfortunate side effect of dizziness. The same can happen if your hearing aids’ volume setting is too high. If you know that this is the problem, you might be able to adjust it yourself without having to call an audiologist.
Underlying Medical Conditions
An underlying medical condition like Meniere’s Disease or another vestibular disorder could cause dizziness. The dizziness could have nothing to do with your hearing aids, but an audiologist or another medical professional could help you diagnose and address the cause.
