Do Hearing Aids Improve Cognitive Function?

Dr. Lisa Bragg Putting a Hearing Aid on for a Patient

Improve your hearing–improve your brain!

It is often noted that hearing loss can lead to dementia and general cognitive decline. Hearing loss poses many different health risks, including social isolation, depression, and cognitive overload, not to mention the inability to catch small but vital sounds. Do hearing aids improve cognitive function?

How Hearing Loss and Cognitive Function Link Together

Your ears process soundwaves, eventually leading them to the auditory nerve, which converts the soundwaves into electrical signals that the brain processes. When someone has hearing loss, the brain can no longer process sounds properly. It can lead to cognitive overload as you try to process sounds that are more difficult to hear than before, which leads to the wearing out of your brain.

Can Hearing Aids Improve Cognitive Function?

When your hearing is restored as best as hearing aids can restore hearing, your brain can relax and process sounds as they were intended to. When that happens, your brain health can improve. At the very least, hearing aids reduce the risk of cognitive decline greatly, especially for older adults. Some patients do see improved cognitive function. However, it is best to pair the use of hearing aids with other brain-healthy habits.

How to Keep Your Brain Healthy

It is important to take time to get used to wearing hearing aids every day, getting professional adjustments if necessary. Then, in combination with wearing your hearing aids every day, it is best to do the following:

  • Eat well: Develop healthy eating habits, including rich nutrients helpful for hearing health.
  • Manage other health problems: High blood pressure and other health issues can affect your hearing health. Ears are very sensitive and can pick up on problems in the body.
  • Get rid of bad health habits: Smoking, vaping, drinking caffeine and alcohol, and taking ototoxic medications can hurt your hearing health.
  • Socialize: Talking and spending time with friends, family, and others in your community helps with your cognitive health. It helps improve your mental well-being, which improves your physical health.
  • Exercise: Engaging in physical exercise and mental exercise also helps keep your brain sharp in more ways than one. The brain is very complex, and living fully, both physically and mentally, will help it work in all the ways it can.
