Prepare Your Ears for Cold Weather!

Stay healthy as the weather gets colder and keep your hearing sharp!

Even in the fall, Maryland has its warmer days. Even so, don’t be fooled! Winter can come in the blink of an eye, and with it can come biting cold, freezing winds, and viral infections. Our hearing health is a part of the picture when it comes to taking good care of ourselves, especially since the ears connect to the nose and throat. Here’s how you can prepare your ears for cold weather.

Practice Healthy Habits

Healthy habits affect all parts of our body and even our mental health. They include getting enough sleep, reducing any stress, getting plenty of exercise, and eating well. Eating healthy doesn’t mean eating lean; it’s an embrace of all the wonderful things the culinary arts have to offer us outside of processed foods and drinks. That being said, you should also avoid smoking, too much alcohol, and any other things that would harm your health.

Clean Your Ears Properly

Keeping your ears clean doesn’t mean ridding them of all ear wax; in fact, that would be detrimental to your ears. Simple ear cleaning just involves wiping out your ears after a hot shower, which usually loosens up your ear wax and lets it drain more easily. If you have dry ear wax that easily compacts, find an audiologist to clean it routinely or do it yourself if you aren’t already.

Prepare for Cold and Flu Season

You could get an ear infection if you catch a cold or virus, only because they connect to the throat and nose. No one wants to get sick in the first place. If you want to avoid a cough, cold, or fever this winter, prepare now by enjoying life and doing things that will strengthen your immune system.

Dress Warmly

When it’s cold, your ears can feel like they are about to explode into smithereens off your head. Don’t avoid warming your ears to look cool. You can do both and wear ear muffs, a stylish hat, or even a hood. Your ears will thank you.
