5 Signs of a Middle Ear Infection in Children

5 Signs of a Middle Ear Infection in Children

If your child is complaining about ear pain, it can be the surest sign that they should see a doctor.

Ear infections can be especially common in children. These infections are most often bacterial or viral and affect the middle ear. This section of the ear is the air-filled space behind the eardrum that contains the tiny vibrating bones of the ear. Due to inflammation and buildup of fluid in this part of the ear associated with ear infections, these can be very painful for children, especially when they seem to be a constant occurrence. To help manage pain or identify potential long-term issues with your child’s hearing health, here are five common symptoms of ear infections to consider.

Ear Pain

If your child is complaining about ear pain, it can be the surest sign that they should see a doctor. Many children will report that their ear pain is worse when lying down.

Difficulty with Hearing

Another sign of an ear infection is difficulty hearing. If you notice that your child isn’t responding to quiet sounds or is having difficulty understanding you, it could be a sign that your child may have a middle ear infection.

High Fever

Fevers are associated with many illnesses, but high fever can also be telling for your child’s ear health. Ear infections may be associated with other illnesses as well, including sinus infections. It’s important to keep ear infections in mind when your child is ill, especially if they experience ear infections often.

Drainage of Fluid from Ear

One sign of an ear infection is fluid draining from the ear. With excessive fluid buildup, you may find some has drained onto your child’s pillow, shirt, or on their outer ear. When this occurs, always contact your child’s doctor to have them checked for an ear infection.

Headaches

Since middle ear infections are associated with inflammation and fluid buildup in the ear, headaches are a common symptom of ear infections. If your child is complaining about head pain or otherwise crying or complaining of pain more than usual, it could be a sign of headaches associated with ear infections. These headaches can also cause your child to sleep less than normal.
