Comprehending the Basics of Ear Infections

Children

Are you worried that your children have an ear infection? This post will let you know the symptoms of it and how you can treat the infection as well.

Having an ear infection can be debilitating to you or anyone else you know who gets them. The one group that is affected the most by ear infections are young children. If you want to know the signs of a possible case of an ear infection read this list that compiles everything you need to know.

What is it?

Ear Infections are very common among young kids. It is determined that 5 out of 6 children will experience the symptoms of an ear infection by age three, according to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders. The cause of most ear infections starts when the tubes that are attached to the back of your throat to the eardrum is clogged with fluid. In a healthy ear that fluid would be able to drain on its own but when it’s blocked bacteria can grow causing inflammation and redness to the eardrum. Getting an ear infection can happen if you are battling a cold or allergies.

Symptoms

The symptoms of an ear infection include pain, difficulty sleeping, fever, difficulty hearing, decreased appetite, and discolored drainage from the ear. If your child has some of these symptoms, this will lead to your child to cry more often, being fussy, and being uncomfortable.

Treatment and Prevention

Years ago the predominant treatment for ear infections was antibiotics although doctors now are putting an end to that practice. Studies have shown that a majority of children can recover from ear infections without the use of antibiotics. Now doctors are recommending you to give children a child’s dose of ibuprofen or even ear drops that are prescribed by the doctor. To prevent these ear infections to happen the primary remedy is vaccines because not only will they help prevent ear infections as well as pneumonia and meningitis. Other ways to prevent ear infections especially with younger children include frequent hand washing, breastfeeding, and limited pacifier use.
