Hearing Aids and Artificial Intelligence

Hearing Aids and Artificial Intelligence

When AI and hearing aids collide: artificial intelligence brings new functions to today’s hearing aids.

2019 is already half over. At the beginning of this year, big announcements were made about groundbreaking advancements in hearing aid technology. Hearing aid designs are becoming more effortless to use and smarter than ever before. Not to be left out of the innovations is the tool of artificial intelligence. How are hearing aids and AI related in 2019, and what will be the outcome? Read on to find out.

How Does Artificial Intelligence Help?

Before we get into the functions of hearing aids with artificial intelligence, what exactly is AI? AI loosely refers to machine intelligence as compared to human intelligence, that is, speech and pattern recognition, decision-making, problem-solving, and more. In AI hearing aid integration, artificial intelligence acts as an automatic adjuster and helper for your personal hearing and health needs. The first such hearing aid so far is Starkey’s Livio AI hearing aid.

The Multiple Functions of AI Hearing Aids

Starkey’s Livio AI hearing aid serves as a good model for the potential future for hearing aids, as Starkey is its first producer. The functions of this device are profoundly diverse.

Artificial intelligence in the aid measures brain health, while sensors in the aid measure body health. Through Starkey’s Thrive app, you can see the results of what the AI and sensors have tracked on your brain and physical health. For brain health, the AI will track how often you use your hearing aid, how you listen in certain situations, and how you engage. The AI will reduce noise levels in crowded situations and heighten the speech volume of those talking with you. It will also remember what you need to hear better and adjust for different scenarios. Additionally, the hearing aid can translate phrases from up to 27 different languages.

For body health, the sensors will track your physical activity, whether or not you are traveling more than 10 mph, when you have a fall (vs. drop the hearing aid), and how often you fall. If the sensors detect a fall, a signal will go out to three designated recipients of your choice after one minute. If a signal is a false alarm, you are able to cancel it through the app or through a button on the hearing aid. Whether you are looking for greater technological versatility in a hearing aid, or are just interested in hearing aid technology, the AI is sure to pave the way in hearing and holistic health.
