How to Know When to Take Your Child to the Audiologist

Know When to Take Your Child to the Audiologist

If you think that your child may be struggling to hear throughout the day, it is crucial to know when you should take those concerns to the next level.

The health of your child is one of the most important things on the mind of a parent. Because hearing is one of our essential senses, it is important to maintain our ability to hear with annual visits to the audiologist. For kids, this is especially important, as early hearing loss must be closely monitored so that it does not worsen over time. If you think that your child may be struggling to hear throughout the day, it is crucial to know when to address your concerns with your audiologist.

Seeing an Audiologist

An audiologist is a specialist that is trained and educated to detect, evaluate, and treat hearing problems. However, there are pediatric audiologists who specialize in treating the hearing problems of children, from infants and up. Early and regular appointments will help you deal with hearing problems as the child ages, which provides a better opportunity to provide more customized treatment. As your child grows, it will also help them communicate much better with you and in school.

When to Visit an Audiologist

Hearing problems can be hard to detect by parents at home. They are often mistaken for learning disabilities or even developmental delays. An audiologist is the person who can provide the answers to those questions you might be asking at home. In babies, ages 7 to 12 months, you may notice a child does not respond to loud noises or their name being called. For the range of 16 to 18 months, a child might not yet express simple words like “mama” or “dada.” In toddlers between 37 to 48 months you may have trouble understanding the child’s speech. There could be many causes for these scenarios, but seeing an audiologist is the best way to rule out a hearing problem or diagnose one.
