Most Common Causes for Itchy Ears

Most Common Causes for Itchy Ears

Do you know all the conditions that could make your ears itch?

Itchy ears are not uncommon, but they sure are bothersome. What are the top causes of itchy ears? It turns out that it could be one of quite a few reasons. Clarity Audiology is happy to help you get to the bottom of it. If you need to speak with an audiologist, Clarity is happy to assist you in the Baltimore area.

Common Causes for Itchy Ears

Dry Ears

Itchy ears could be due to dry skin. Why might you have dry skin in your ears? Your earwax is your ears’ natural lubricant and insect repellant. One possibility is that you are not producing enough earwax. Another is that you are cleaning out your ears too frequently and causing a lack of earwax.

Unrelated to earwax, the issue could be psoriasis, eczema, or dermatitis, which is an inflammation of the skin. Dry ears are easy to treat. It is best to see a doctor, especially if your ears are bleeding or crusting.

Ear Infection

An ear infection could also irritate your ears. Bacteria or a virus in the ears could give your ears an itchy sensation. You will know if it is an ear infection if you also experience clogged ears and possibly a headache and tinnitus. It is possible to get an ear infection from swimming, a respiratory infection, etc.

An ear infection usually goes away on its own, but you will need to go to the ER if your eardrum ruptures. Ear drops help alleviate itchiness; do not apply ear drops if you have a ruptured eardrum.

Allergy

Itchiness is also a sign of an allergic reaction. It could be from something you consumed, such as food, drink, or medication. It could also be an allergy to something on your skin; some people with sensitive skin could be affected by the plastic on their hearing aids. Yet another possibility is that it is a symptom of spring or fall allergies, also known as hay fever.

Removing the allergen from your system or taking an allergy pill would be the answer.
