Protect Your Ears This Fourth of July!

Protect Your Ears This Fourth of July!

Hear clear this Fourth of July! Happy Fourth, and keep your ears safe!

Celebrations often come with much merriment and cheer. It often comes with festive sounds and sights, and these are usually both loud sounds and sights. Hearing protection is more essential than many might realize, but with proper precautions, you can keep your ears sharp and healthy! Below are ways to protect your ears this Fourth of July!

Can Fireworks Affect Your Hearing?

Fireworks can blast at a decibel of 150-175 decibels, higher than the recommended noise exposure for both adults and children. A suggested threshold would be a maximum of 140 decibels for adults and 120 decibels for children. To make viewing fireworks possible at this decibel level, an adult would need to stand around 45-60 yards away, while a child might need to be up to 180 yards away.

Indeed, fireworks can affect your hearing due to their high decibel level, which means your ears could suffer from tinnitus, temporarily decreased hearing, or permanent hearing loss.

Ways to Protect Your Ears

There are two main ways to protect your ears so you don’t have to worry about standing too close. One is to use earplugs. One can buy foam earplugs at the convenience store. An alternative is to purchase custom earplugs from Clarity Audiology in Baltimore, especially if you are around loud noises in daily life. The other option is headphones, which are both comfortable and easy to wear.

Protecting Against Noise-Induced Hearing Loss

While you want to be mindful to protect your ears this Fourth of July, you also can consider how to protect them year-round. Noise-induced hearing loss is the most common type of hearing loss in the United States and far more prevalent than one might expect among the younger generations. Long exposure to music through earbuds or headphones is part of the problem, for example. One can preserve their hearing by listening at a low volume for shorter periods at a time. For occupations that endure loud sounds daily, special earplugs are a great option.

Have a Safe and Happy Fourth of July!
