Why a Visit to Your Audiologist is Crucial to Your Health

Why a Visit to Your Audiologist is Crucial to Your Health

Hearing loss is something that many Americans face throughout their lifetime.

Hearing loss is something that many Americans face throughout their lifetime. Even if you don’t think that you’re “old enough” to have to worry about hearing loss, it is an issue that should be on your radar. A visit to an audiologist to check your hearing should be part of your regular health screenings.

It’s Not About Age

While hearing loss is sometimes associated with growing older, it can affect people of any age. Many school-age children suffer some degree of hearing loss, and even new babies sometimes are born with detectable hearing loss (this is why all newborn babies have their hearing checked). Since hearing loss is caused by a variety of things and not just age, individuals of every age should consider getting their hearing tested.

Hearing Loss has Many Causes

Though aging is one cause of hearing loss, it is not the only one. Ongoing exposure to loud noises or noise pollution, frequent ear infections or other inner ear diseases, and a family history of hearing loss are all things that indicate you should get your hearing checked. There are also some medications that can damage hearing if used long-term, so if you are taking certain medications, you should see an audiologist.

Hearing Loss is Hard to Detect

Hearing loss is often gradual, so it very often goes unnoticed for a long while. If you’re having trouble discerning what is being said when multiple people are talking or in noisy environments, that could be a sign of hearing loss. Another possible sign is if you miss high-pitched noises, like doorbells, or if you need people to repeat themselves to understand them. If you’re experiencing any changes in your hearing, you should see an audiologist.

Hearing Loss Includes Additional Symptoms

Occasionally, hearing loss is accompanied by other symptoms, like persistent ringing in your ears, ear pain, or dizziness. If you experience these, you should get your hearing checked. It is also crucial to get your hearing checked if you have experienced recent head or ear trauma.
