Fun Facts about Ears

There’s more to ears than meets the eye! Have you heard these ear fun facts?

Ears are interesting organs of the body; they are the things that stick on either side of our head, some sticking out more than others. Ears are fascinating, more fascinating than you might think. The more you know, the better you can take care of these intricate hearing instruments. Enjoy these fun facts about ears!

Ears Are Unique Like Fingerprints

Plenty of people wonder about this or heard about it through entertainment. It is in fact true; ears are so unique to each person that professional investigators can use photos of people’s ears to identify individuals.

Ears Are Self-Cleaning

Ears are mostly self-cleaning. Earwax lubricates the ear canal and traps debris that might float in it, and the earwax typically drains outward on its own and with the help of swallowing. Showering helps soften and remove hardened earwax further.

Ears Are Connected to Your Nose and Throat

Our ears are connected to your nose and throat through the Eustachian tubes. The Eustachian tube connects the inner ear to the top of the back of the throat, partway through the channel connecting the nose and the throat. Some doctors are ear, nose, and throat specialists for that reason.

Ears Control Our Sense of Balance

Ears are not only the organs of hearing but of balance as well. The inner ear contains the cochlea, a snail shell-shaped organ with semicircular canals attached to it. The semicircular canals contain tiny crystals in fluid that control our sense of balance, speed, and gravity.

Healthy Foods Promote Hearing

We are what we eat; it affects our health in ways we don’t even realize. Certain foods have nutrients that promote nerve and circulation health. You can read all about it here.

Medications and Health Issues Can Affect Hearing

Ears are very sensitive. Medications and health conditions that have nothing to do with the ears can affect one’s hearing. It can be something as seemingly unrelated as a hip implant.

Hearing Happens Partly in Our Brains

Do we hear with our ears or with our brains? Sound waves funnel through the ears, turn into electrical signals, and go up to the brain for interpretation. That’s why a concussion can affect hearing.
