Hearing Protection for Babies: Tips

Keep your baby’s hearing safe with these simple tips!

Do you have a big event coming up, and you are bringing your baby? Perhaps it is a fireworks show, a concert, a plane ride, or a wedding reception. Whether you are going to an event, traveling, or just staying at home, you can use these hearing protection tips for babies.

Tips for Hearing Protection for Babies

Know Sources of Loud Noise

The first step is to know what sounds could risk your baby’s hearing health. Sixty decibels is the average sound level for a normal conversation, and it isn’t recommended to expose a baby to over 70 decibels of noise. Items and experiences that are significantly above the mark include airplane rides, lawnmowers, parades, certain toys, engines, and washing machines.

Use a Decibel App

If you are not 100% sure what the risk is, you can download a decibel app that will measure the decibel level of the given situation. Adults should also limit their decibel exposure to 70 decibels max, too, so if it is loud for you, then it is worth protecting your baby’s hearing.

Keep Your Distance

The easiest way to limit noise exposure is to keep your distance from them. Avoid loud noises and limit them in your own home. Keep a safe distance from concerts, party venues, loud machinery, fireworks, etc.

Invest in Baby Earmuffs

It is impossible to avoid everything that emits over 70 decibels, and you might also want your baby to join in on the fun. That is when you can invest in baby earmuffs with a noise reduction rating (NRR) of 22 minimum. Check the ratings before you buy and ensure that it is a snug fit, not too tight and not too loose.

Now You Know!

Babies’ ears are much more sensitive to sound than an adult’s and are worth protecting. After all, hearing is a huge part of how we connect with others and the world. Stay safe and have a great time!
