How Cold Weather Affects Hearing Aids

Your hearing aids can remain sharp, even in freezing temperatures!

Cold weather is here in Maryland, and you might already have seen sprinkles of snow as early as November. Our hearing and balance are found in our ears, and they are worth caring for, especially in winter, when the freezing weather can cause pain. Learn here how cold weather affects hearing aids and how you can protect them.

How Freezing Temperatures Affect Hearing Aids

Drained Battery Life

In cold weather, molecules tend to slow down. Batteries can drain faster in cold weather because of the changed chemical reactions due to cold temperatures. In general, it’s best to recharge your hearing aid batteries if they are rechargeable every night.

Potential Problems from Moisture

Electrical problems can occur with your hearing aids if moisture gets into them. This problem can happen in any season. It is also more likely to happen if the wearer works out or engages in strenuous physical activity regularly.

Brittleness

Materials like plastic or silicone can become brittle in freezing temperatures. Cold temperatures can transform the molecular makeup of many objects and cause them to shatter. Hearing aids exposed to extremely cold temperatures could weaken structurally.

Winter Care for Hearing Aids

Keep Them Clean and Moisture-Free

Routine hearing aid cleaning will help keep your hearing aids moisture-free. You can wipe your hearing aids daily and schedule routine hearing aid cleaning professionally. Avoid getting your hearing aids wet in any way, or consider water-resistant hearing aids.

Protect Your Ears in Freezing Temperatures

Keeping your ears warm will solve a world of problems. Wear a winter hat that covers the ears, wear earmuffs, or wrap a scarf over your head. Even putting up a hood can help. Your ears will be warm and your hearing aids will be safe from the cold.

Store Properly

As much as possible, keep your hearing aids dry and at room temperature, even in storage. Mark your hearing aid case so it is easy to find, and keep it in the same place, away from any pets or small children.
