Ears are complex. The shape of the outer ear is as unique as a human fingerprint, and the shape of the inner ear can be just as complex. While it might be rare, it can be annoying to get water stuck in your ears. It results in muffled hearing, a feeling of fullness in the ear, and potentially itchiness. There are several helpful tricks to get water out of your ears before an infection occurs. Read them here and see when to call an audiologist.
Ways to Get Water Out of Your Ears
Tilting Your Head and Pulling Your Outer Ear
One way to get water out of your ears is to tilt your head and manipulate your outer ear, pulling up and back from the top, to maneuver the lodged water out of your ear canal. Your ear canal is naturally attached to your outer ear, and so might move with its movement.
Suctioning Your Ear with Your Hand
Another option is to create a suction and draw the water out of your ear. The concept is similar to using a plunger in a toilet. For removing water stuck in your ear canal, you can tilt your head sideways and put your palm over your affected ear to create a seal. Flatten and release your hand over your ear until the water comes loose.
Using a Hair Dryer
Blowing a hair dryer on a low setting can help dry out your ear. If your ear has excess moisture, it is a last resort to removing that pesky water. Be sure to keep the hair dryer on a low setting and a safe distance from your ear so as not to burn your skin or hair.
Applying an Ear Oil or Other Solution
If you are starting to experience ear pain, applying organic garlic ear oil, hydrogen peroxide, or olive oil to the ear canal can help kill germs that might be starting to grow there. It can also help soften and drain impacted ear wax.
When to Call an Audiologist
Call your audiologist if you experience:
- Fluid draining from the ear
- Fever
- Persistent, severe ear pain
- Swelling of the ear
